What makes actors so confident?

It isn’t just ‘who we are’, it’s not because we relish being the centre of attention and it’s not because we love showing off (well, some do!)

It’s because the nature of our job requires us to take risks on a daily basis; risks that don’t always pay off and that often lead us to feel embarrassed, insecure and inadequate.

Now you might think this would crush one’s confidence, and you’re right; for most people this would be enough to scare them into never stepping onto a stage again! However actors have no choice. We have to come back the next day and do it all over again.

And it’s this process of failing, picking ourselves up, working out how to do it better and trying again that builds lasting self-confidence, resilience and skill.

If you do that enough you learn that you can handle pretty much anything, and then nothing is really that scary.

Want to build that kind of confidence?

Acting for Confidence

This course provides a safe, structured and supportive space to build confidence and resilience through the medium of acting.

Each session is designed to encourage you to step out of your comfort zone in a relaxed and fun environment, whilst learning skills that can be utilised in your day-to-day life.

Over 6 weeks you will explore some of the techniques actors use to create a compelling and realistic performance, with the main aim to have fun and learn something new with like-minded people.

Never done any form of acting before. Great fun, great experience. Do it! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

  • Play

Children use play to learn how to get things right, build resiliance and broaden creativity; yet this stops when we grow up.

Rediscovering play as an adult, and learning to enjoying an activity without the pressure of being ‘good’, allows us to embrace failure not as a negative, but an essential means of learning how to get things right.

  • Improvisation

Improvisation is without doubt the very best way to build self-confidence. We often shy away from anything that we cannot control, for fear we won’t be able to handle what comes our way.

Taking risks in a relaxed, low-pressure environment teaches our brains that we actually can handle most things that come our way, to release our desire for control, and that discomfort is not dangerous.

  • Scenes

Working with a scene partner teaches us everything we need to know about connecting with others; where they are coming from, what they need from us and how to offer that physically, vocally and emotionally.

These are skills we use everyday, and help us create healthy, positive relationships. It’s the perfect training to become a fantastic communicator!

  • Characterisation

Most of us rarely consider the messages our body language sends those around us, despite the fact that it will most likely form their first impression.

Gain insight into how the smallest adjustments to your body can convey a multitude of different characteristics and moods, and how the way we hold ourselves on the outside can have a major impact in how we feel on the inside.
